A man who yesterday walked to Nakulabye Police Station claiming that he set ablaze the Kasubi Tombs has been handed over the Criminal Investigations Directorate for further interrogation.
Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba confirmed that the man reported himself to police but declined to reveal details of what the man told police.
“It is true that a man came to police claiming that he is the one who burnt the Kasubi Tombs. We are recording his statement from which we shall analyze it,” Ms Nabakooba said yesterday.
But a police source, who preferred anonymity because they aren’t authorized to talk to the press, said the man, a resident of Ndejje on Entebbe Road, revelations were not taken lightly that is why he has been handed over to the Deputy Criminal Investigations Director, Moses Sakira, for interrogation.
Mr Sakira is also heads the investigation team of the Kasubi Tombs fire.
This is the second person to claim responsibility since the tombs were burnt two weeks ago.
Police have also received reports from his family members that he isn’t mentally stable. “He came in pair of shorts with a bible and a rosy. He spoke with a lot of confidence about the matter,” a police officer said.
The man claimed he was sent by the Holy Spirit to burn what he described as Satanic shrines, which the Devil uses to kill people in the country.
The man told police that he boarded a taxi in the New Taxi Park and alight off at Kasubi Stage. He claimed that he entered the tombs from the rear side before he lit the grass thatched roof with a match stick.
He alleged he fled after seeing part of the grass had caught fire.
The Inspector General of Police, Major General Kale Kayihura also seemed to have been taken up by the news.
“I need to go because I am going for the investigations about the fire at the Kasubi Tombs,” Gen. Kayihura said at Police headquarters yesterday.
